Shaping Spatial Constellations

Raphael Sbrzesny lives and works in Berlin. He studied fine arts, sculpture, contemporary music, classical percussion, chamber music, experimental music theater and theory in Stuttgart, Munich, Bern, and Paris. From 2018 to 2023, he was Professor for Rethinking Interpretation in Sound, Performance, and Conceptual Artistic Practice at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. Sbrzesny pursues an expanded concept of performance and sculpture. He develops multimedia installations in which portable sculptures become musical instruments alongside videos, costumes, and text. In his artistic practice, he is interested in the body as an instrument and setting for a subjective historiography. At the center of his work is the figure of the emancipated interpreter, whom he juxtaposes with the historically informed interpreter in music.
